Our
Meet Your Neighbours series continues with an a profile of Clint
Desmarais, owner of the UPS store in Columbia Place. I first met Clint
when I walked into the store, early last summer, to share with him my
concept for the Lower Sahali Bulletin and to get some quotes for
printing. Clint put me at ease that I would be in good hands. He even
decided to become a regular sponsor of the Bulletin!
Growing up in Northern Alberta, Clint seems to have always been in love with Kamloops and area. Many of his family and friends regularly vacationed on the Shushwap. He applied for transfers with his former company and, when the opportunity to buy the local UPS store came up in late 2008, he jumped at it. He moved here in January 2009 and his family followed a couple of months later. He has three small boys and, his wife (the brains, he tells me) works mainly behind the scenes in the business with accounting and administration. They all love the Kamloops lifestyle.
He describes his first full year in business as a successful "learning year" - getting to know the business and learning how to serve customers the best way he can. The economic negativity of the past 18 months seems not to affect his attitude. In business, he says, it pays to be positive.
The UPS store does so much more than shipping. I've personally printed, faxed, used the computer and Internet, and had business cards designed. Clint prides himself on the store's quick turnaround on print orders.
Clint's featured service is private mailbox rentals. He tells me that the boxes he offers allow for courier deliveries because the boxes are actually associated with a proper street address. Couriers typically deliver to the store first thing in the morning. Also offered is a call in service in which box owners can call to check if a certain piece of mail has arrived. Many of his customers are home based / small businesses and people who regularly vacation out of town - such as snowbirds.
Finally, Clint welcomes any questions by phone, 250 372 5665, or by email,
